Top 5 Bands You Wish You Were In

Bands come and go but others remain legends. We’ve pick the top 5 bands we wish we were in and the unlucky 1 we’re glad to be out of.

And make sure you don’t miss out on your chance to add to the article, by adding your own suggestions using the comment box below.

At Number 5 for being Rock Legends: Iron Maiden

If you’re going to be in a band, you might as well choose one with legendary stage performances and genre setting techniques.

Iron Maiden released their debut album in 1980 and the four studio albums followed in consecutive years. With each album the band toured the world extensively.

Live performances would include lavish Egyptian stage props, head banging galore and stunning reviews from across the globe. The highly acclaimed tours even caused riots in LA, when fans were worried they wouldn’t be able to get tickets to the see the band.

The LA gigs also hosted the infamous Live After Death album and concert video and inspired the first specialist Metal Radio station in America, KNAC.

“Mystical and magical, cerebral and sonic, Maiden’s rivalled only by Judas priest as metal’s greatest live act,” said reviewer Mark Hanser who was at the gig.

“Iron Maiden, it must be mentioned, don’t just put on a show – they stage a spectacular. Imagine, if you will, a stage lifted from the valleys of Luxor; with pylons like pyramids and funeral pyres, or lighting scaffolds covered with scarabs and runes, further arranged like a dragonfly’s wings. Imagine, too, music so riff-laden and magnetic that each song erupts into an eargasm – and with lyrics both clever and literary, no less.”

At number 4 Rebellion, Anarchy and Attitude: Sex Pistols

I’m sure you will agree, when visualizing yourself in a band it’s vital you have a rock attitude that demands respect. At number 4, pop anarchy boys the Sex Pistols win fourth place with their fresh and frank views on society and music.

The UK punk group were renowned for their debut single 'Anarchy in the UK'. The track caused a huge amount of stern press in the UK and led to their record label at the time, EMI dropping the band, which in turn led to the band penning the classic ‘EMI.’

Swearing on TV in controversial interviews, bad behaviour, inciting riots on stage and general anarchy, not to mention the heroin addiction and early death of band bassist Sid Vicious and the possible manslaughter of his girlfriend Nancy, all make the Sex Pistols a riotous act and one of music’s legendary bands.

At Number 3 Glitzy and Glamorous: The Supremes

The commercially successful Supremes were glitzy and fabulous. With twelve number ones, sell out concerts and regular appearances on T.V.

The Supremes were the band of the 60’s with many arguing they were one of the top bands of the decade across all genres, from pop to rock to soul.

The formation of the band nearly went through as many changes as The Sugarbabes however the band’s legacy is best known with the line-up of Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson and Diana Ross.

The doo-wop group made a huge impact on Motown records. They released several tunes before making it big and they were even featured clapping on early records by Marvin Gaye. The song “Where Did Our Love Go” made number one and got them in the spotlight for several big TV shows during the 60’s.

“Baby Love” soon followed and again reached number one, making it the first single by an all girl band to make the top spot in England.

At Number 2 Blondie

The second punk band in our list includes the prestigious band Blondie formed of Clem Burke, Jimmy Destri, Nigel Harrison, Frank Infante, Chris Stein, Gary Valentine and the iconic Debbie aka Deborah Harry.

Recently placed in the renowned US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Blondie emerged as glam rock superstars of the 70’s and had a highly successful career with the hits “Heart of Glass” , “Call Me”, “The Tide Is High” and “Rapture.”

Not only were the group known for their revolutionary sound but also for their edgy image, with the latest clothes and hair styles. Debbie in particular became a huge icon of the punk era and remains a dominant symbol of punk music.

At Number One the Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Making the top spot is rock, funk, hip hop, pop, rock band the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. They’ve lasted throughout the 80’s and 90’s and are still going strong.

The band formed at school in 1983 and has remained unique in music since. Their distinctive sound and dedication to music makes them the top band we would like to be in.

Over the years the band has been through many ordeals from heroin addiction to death. However, they have triumphed and continued to produce rocking music despite several of their earlier albums receiving little praise or media attention. These included debut album The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Freaky Styley.

The band's varied musical style has fused traditional rock, heavy metal, elements of funk, punk rock, hip hop and improvisation.

Best known for the albums Blood Sugar Sex Magic, Californication and the singles “Under the Bridge”, “Breaking the Girl”, “Suck My Kiss” and “Dani California” we give this band our ultimate praise.

The band you wouldn’t want to be in

UB40

Oh dear UB40. No matter how many times the song “Red, Red Wine’ gets played on air or sung at karaoke we would be too embarrassed to play in this band.

However, that’s not to say the boys don’t have an impressive track record.

The band’s career has been pretty successful and started in 1980 when asked to join 'The Pretenders' as their support act on a national tour. During the tour the band released the single “Food for Thought” which made the top five.

Playing music from Jamaican origins the boys from the West Midlands didn’t have it easy and had to stick up for their style of music. “Red, Red, Wine” was the first single from the album Labour of Love and made it straight to number one in the UK charts.

But that said UB40 never had the cool edge or vibe any of the other bands in our lists had. White reggae-infused cheesy pop, anyone? No thanks!

From Mark Hanser
It's soooo cool to see an excerpt from a review I wrote twenty years ago. I don't write about music anymore - haven't for ages - as i'd rather be a singer + songwriter + performer than a critic. It's nice to have my musical musings remembered - thank you!
