It's slightly off the beaten track, located in the Elbow Rooms, Leeds.
But once discovered, anyone with a penchant for quality hip hop, breaks and
drum 'n' bass will be back week after week.
Sugarbeat Club was set up four years ago by Tim and Jez of Utah Saints as an
opportunity to get back to DJ-ing to a live, ground level crowd. As the popularity
of the night grew, and as they began to start playing other gigs around the
country, they realised the need to book quality guests to fill in when they
were away.
So far Sugarbeat has played host to a variety of guests including 2ManyDjs
(Soulwax), Arthur Baker, DJ Dexter (The Avalanches), Doves, Mixologists,The
Freelance Hellraiser, Osymyso, Run (Run DMC), The Scratch Perverts, Aphrodite,
Deadly Avenger, DJ Supreme, Rodney P, Krafty Kuts and DJ Zinc to name but a
few.
The ethos of the night is not based on a particular genre, but is instead inspired
by creating a 'you-could-be-round-your-mates-house' style party vibe. The Sugarbeat
crew know how to have a good time, and they want to share that. Their mix 'n'
match old-skool hip hop style blends funk with breaks, beats with soul, D&B
with electro and, above all, warmth with a sense of humour.
A very important factor of the night is the door tax - where else on a Saturday
night could you see some of the finest international DJs in one of the friendliest
atmospheres for a mere six pounds? And that's the way they like it - good times
shouldn't break the bank, man.
