The Clientele are back from a successful world tour with the critically acclaimed new album God Save the Clientele. Singer/guitarist Al told us about his best ever gig and why he’d like to get stuck in a lift with Noel Gallagher.
How did you get started?
At 6th form college we were the biggest snobs about music so we formed a band.
How would you describe your style?
Soft but swift.
Best ever gig you have played to date?
Playing at a 14th century cathedral in the Basque country [northern Spain] during a huge and terrifying thunderstorm, to an audience of grannies and 3 year olds.
What was your best gig or band that you have seen as a gig-goer?
Arthur Lee and Love at the Royal Festival Hall in 2001
What are currently your favourite bands?
Boards of Canada, the Sea and Cake, Broadcast, Pipas
What was your first job?
A paperboy
When was the last time you threw up?
In a hotel room in Spain a few years ago - whisky.
What's your pre-gig drink of choice?
For me, a nice gin and tonic with some lime and ice.
Do you do the whole groupie love thing?
No
Which other celebrity would you like to be trapped in a lift with?
Noel Gallagher, so I could kick him to death.
