Sex and the City Soundtrack

The highly anticipated Sex and the City soundtrack is a bit of a disappointment, writes resident reviewer Davina Richards.

At last, after much hype and twitching of the grapevine, the eagerly awaited quintessential girly film, ‘Sex and the City’ has finally hit the big screen. (Cue lots of girly shouts and screams).

As high-heeled ladies and gay men alike flood to cinemas to fight over tickets, never before has the phrase ‘handbags at dawn’ been so apt. And as a natural follow up to the film is the release of the ‘Sex and the City: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack’ Album. But is it any good?

The truth is it is something of a disappointment. Filled with little known, uninspiring tracks, the album somehow fails to catch the light-headed fun-seeking spirit of Sex and the city. The first track, Fergie’s ‘Labels or Love’ is a rather cliched, non-descript R and B song. In track 3 Duffy livens things up with her funky hit single ‘mercy.’

The next few tracks are mainly dance and are generally quite a bland unexciting selection of tunes. With a few welcome exceptions such as the beautiful rendition of ‘How deep is your love’ by The Bird and the Bee, Al Green’s ‘How can you mend a broken heart’ and Aerosmith’s classic ‘Walk This Way,’ this album definitely improves as it progresses.

Within context of the film these songs fit the scenes and take on a resonance that works perfectly, however as an album the songs have no consistency. Take my advice, give this album a miss - go and see the film instead!
