Scouting for Girls

Their success was unexpected and their debut single made the top 10 six weeks in a row. We had a chat with Scouting for Girls to find out more.

Chloe Addo spoke to band member and bassist Greg Churchouse on their recent success, the release of their second single and why his legs come in handy.

After your first single, which spent 6 weeks in the top 10, are you nervous about the success of your second single, ‘Elvis Aint Dead’ which is out 10th December?

With ‘She’s So Lovely’ none of us expected the success that it had. We’re not expecting anything, so whatever happens will be lovely.

Are you surprised by your success?

Bloody surprised- we all got a little excited about that. It was fantastic. People have just been absolutely great to us.

How did you get started?

Scouting for Girls is about two and half years old but previous to that me and Pete had been playing together for like the last ten years in different types of bands.

Music has always been something we wanted to do. Myself and Roy started in a band when we were just 14 at school.

Roy and Pete met at cubs when they were 6 and myself and Roy met when we were 11 at high school and the rest is history.

It’s been a long rocky road. Then it all exploded in February which has been the greatest six odd months of my life.

Were you all boy scouts?

The other two were, I was in the Air Cadets. They do take the mickey out of me for that.

Is that where the name of the band comes from?

It’s more of a play on words from the book scouting for Boys, by Baden Powell about the scout movement. It’s a cheeky pun on that, scout for girls- its like the transition from when you’re a young boy building tree houses, camping and getting your first job, discovering girls.

How would you describe your style?

Indie pop is what we finally settled on. We have tinges of indie but at the end of the day we make pop tunes and it’s the kind of music that we really love.

What has been the best gig you’ve ever played to date?

It’s a tricky one, Glastonbury rates highly up there: we only played to 50 or 60 people at the beginning of the festival and I had never been to Glastonbury so that was really special to me.

I know by the end of the season when we played V fest the crowd there were absolutely amazing - I know that was one of my favourite gigs. But all the shows have been going from strength to strength.

What has been the funniest thing that happened at a gig so far?

At V festival they had some kind of blow up inflatable beach ball that was kind of bouncing around the crowd and it got thrown on the stage. I kicked it back out but it came back again, so Roy decided to give it a great big kick and he kicked it straight into a guy’s face.

He was alright though, he messages us on Myspace and said ‘it was me who got kicked in the face, but don’t worry I’m not suing’.

What are currently your favourite band(s)/artists?

I’ve got the Wombats album which is pretty rocking. I’m a huge fan of Kate Nash’s new album.

Who is your all time favourite act?

My personal one would be the Stone Roses.

If you weren’t in SFG and you could be in any other band, which band would you choose?

Wow that’s a good question, that’s a tricky one. Think I’d like to be in Supergrass, just because they produced great pop tunes in an indie way a bit like ourselves.

Which other celebrity would you like to be trapped in a lift with and why?

Dave Grohl because he’s the nicest man in rock.

They say you should never meet your heroes but I reckon he would be the one person that would never disappoint.

What’s your pre-gig drink of choice?

At the moment I think its Red Bull, we’ve just gone from doing half hour festival sets up to doing an hour and 15 and I tell you its taken is toll. Jumping around on stage for an hour you definitely need a bit of caffeine to get a boost.

Is the song ‘She’s so Lovely’ about the presenter Michaela Strachan, who is pictured on your Myspace?

We actually have a secret track on our album called ‘Michaela Strachan broke my heart when I was 12’

‘She’s so lovely’ isn’t really written about one particular girl its about a collage of different older ladies who are rather unattainable but you still have a big crush on.

You guys are from London, where would you recommend going out?

I wouldn’t recommend people going out in our hometown (laughing).

The great thing about living where we do, Harrow area, your literally spoilt for choice. But we use to put on our shows at a place called the Trinity Bar, which looks like it was taken straight out of Camden and dropped in Harrow. It’s kind of funky.

What are 3 things people may not know about you

I hate football and the other two boys love it.

Lots of people think SFG is only a couple of years old but we’ve been friends for well over ten years.

My favourite food would be curry.

Are you in favour of the smoking ban?

As a smoker it’s going sound strange but I am. It’s just nice to go to pub and not stink of smoke. It can be a pain in the arse now it’s getting colder and you’ve got to stand outside but it helps you smoke less and it makes a nicer atmosphere; although some pubs are starting to smell like feet and stale beer and that has been a bit of a problem.

If you were going to have a fight with The Pigeon Detectives, would you win?

Definitely not. We’re the softest lads I know. I’ve never been in a fight and I have thin weak arms which would be no use but I do have long legs to run away with.

What advice would you give to new bands?

Don’t ever give up always keep doing what your doing. We always feel privileged to have got signed but we spent many many years working crappy little part time jobs and still doing what we’re doing. Just have hope and use Myspace.

Do you think the internet has helped people like yourselves break into the industry?

Phenomenally so. It’s a great way to contact your fans, people can listen to your tunes; it’s just an amazing tool. I think we owe quite a lot to Myspace.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully just doing what we’ve been doing, if we’ve lucky enough to have such a long career. This is all we’ve ever wanted to do since we were kids.
