Joey Negro and the Sunburst Band

Instead of making a uniquely inspired statement, it feels a little like Joey is trying to re-gain success from a style of dance music that is slowly becoming outdated, says Alex Chin.

Joey Negro, best known for his involvement in the 90’s house scene, has gone out on a limb with his latest album ‘Moving with the Shakers’.

Intended as a direct reaction to the rise of electro-house music, this collection of funky disco-house tunes is full of looped instrumentals and complex harmonies.

In all honesty, one may admire Joey for reacting against an increasingly annoying trend of beeping distorted sound however; I personally feel that this album feels like a creative stab in the dark.

Despite this, Joey Negro aka Dave Lee is still acknowledged as one of the masters of all things dance-floor and credible. One of the first producers to sample disco music, he was one of the DJ’s who worked hard to create and sculpt the term ‘disco house’.

Despite a DJ CV that would impress any club-goer and more top10’s than any other UK house producer, it feels that Dave’s finger on the UK house scene is slipping a bit.

Dave would present a reason for this album’s ‘retro’ feel; he says that The Sunburst Band is born out of passion and not from an urge to seek commercial success.

In his own worlds, “It’s not like I’m the guy who harps on that it was so much better back in ’78 but at the same time I’m a bit of a polar resistor who goes against the flow.”

I have this and another Sunburst cd and I really like most of the songs. Thing is, it isnt even a house album, more of a soul/disco thing....maybe like JK or d-influence. Not sure this reviewer really understands this sort of music.
