We’ve predicted his pivotal year in music will be 2008 and we like his sound- so to find out a little more on this new character we sent Chloe Addo to probe the one and only Jack Savoretti.
Born 1983, Jack is half Italian and half English. As a wee child he moved around Europe and ended up at an American School in Switzerland. There he developed an accent which he describes as “transatlantic mutt”.
Aged 16 Jack felt the need to pick up a guitar and play away with delight. For several years Jack experimented with music, writing country songs one minute and reggae hits the next.
His debut album “Between the Minds” made it to the top 20 in the iTunes chart and caught the attention of Radio 1 DJ Jo Wiley.
After hearing all of this and completely mesmerized with the album, Chloe was keen to ask Jack some very important questions.
What's your pre-gig drink of choice?
Beer- any type.
How would you describe your style?
Don’t know if I could put it in a box- I’ve always liked the kind of music you can lose yourself in and I hope that’s what my music does.
Who are your influences?
Simon and Garfunkel and Kris Kristofferson were big parts of why I started writing songs to begin with.
How do you feel being compared to Damien Rice, Ray LaMontagne and David Gray?
It’s silly but it’s flattering.
Why do you think it’s silly?
Because I don’t consider myself anywhere close to what those guys have achieved.
What’s different between yourself and the artists I’ve named?
I grew up listening to lots of music, not just English but Italian, Spanish, French, Russian. I lean on the shoulders of more cultures I think, because I don’t really identify with one particular culture myself.
You’ve previously said that you would write a country song one minute and a reggae song the next. Does this mean than your next album could potentially sound like Bob Marley?
(Laughing hysterically) You never know. Since I moved to London the reggae songs have disappeared, it could be the weather.
Have you decided to agree within the acoustic genre?
Yeah I think, but I’d always try and do what is best for the song rather than for my particular sound.
You were recently picked by Urbanplanet.co.uk as one of the artists we think will make it big in 2008 visit: How does that make you feel?
You’re banging in your head against a lot of walls when you’re doing this- so when someone turns to you and says we like this it keeps you going. It’s nice. Thank you.
Who do you think will make it big in 2008?
Laura Marling- her album is phenomenal.
What was it like touring with Corinne Bailey Rae?
That was amazing. Probably the best schooling I could have asked for at that time.
I learnt what it is to be humble and what working hard means. I didn’t realise that before I thought it was drink, eat, play.

Are there any celebs you hope to woo with your new found fame?
Nope. (Laughs)
If you could pick any other band or artist to play with who would you choose?
I’d love to do something with Gypsy King, people completely out of my genre, maybe work with different DJs. Fresh From Bad Company, they do drum and bass. I think their stuff is great so I’d like to do something with them. That would be great.
What was your first job?
Making falafels in Shepherd’s Bush- very glamorous.
Which celebrity would you least like to be stuck on a desert island with and why?
Anyone who makes a job out of criticising people and judging people I wouldn’t like to be stuck with.
Like Simon Cowell?
That’s an example but I won’t quote his name.
As a child you travelled around Europe a lot, where were your favourite places?
Italy, there is very little I can say is wrong with it. I also love Switzerland and the hideaway feel you get from it, you feel very protected and the Alps make a very nice wall.
I’m getting use to England, I feel much more like a Londoner than I do English if that makes any sense.
I love London, it is great place to run from but it’s a cool place to come home to. It’s probably not very cool but I love west London.
What advice would you give to artists/bands trying to break into the music industry?
There are 2 businesses out there- music and business. Just keep your head on your shoulders and get a balance. You don’t have to go too much into either side- find that fine line and try and make sure you’re always doing what you want to do and not what someone else is telling you.
Who is your all time favourite act?
Kris Kristofferson, Paul Simon, Nash- guys who are all about the songs.
Which one song do you wish you had written?
Me and Bobby McGee.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years times?
No idea, hopefully on a desert island writing songs for me and my dog.
