Hyper is set to release his hot new album “Rewired” onto the scene, a mix compilation of Electro & Breaks with samples of bands like Digitalism, Bloc party, Broken Family Band and NIN. We caught up with him to find out what makes him tick, and why he’d like to be stuck in a lift with, erm, Ant and Dec?
How did you get started?
I was a bedroom DJ until I took a music management course, moved to London and set up promo company called Waxworks. From there I set up the Y3K/Y4K series for Distinctive and it kind of went from there. Production came along later for me!
How would you describe your music?
Noisy, Electronic Punk rock on the whole. My club music which is what 'ReWired' is based on still has live influences and is more driving!
Best ever gig you have played to date?
Probably at Exit festival a couple of years back. I played on the castle wall to more than 15000 people in the moat as the sun came up.
What was your best gig or band that you have seen as a gig-goer?
Depends what mood I'm in really. For dance based stuff it would be the Prodigy, their show is like no other and I like that they actually have live stuff going on onstage instead of it being a couple of guys with banks of keyboards that look pretty and don t get played. I enjoyed seeing the Melvins a couple of months back at Carling Academy and Fugazi blew me away 2 years ago at The Forum in London.
What are your favourite bands?
Futureheads, CSS, Digitalism.
What was your first job?
A paperboy!
When was the last time you threw-up?
Hotel room in New Zealand 3 weeks ago through, erm, exhaustion!
What’s your pre-gig drink of choice?
Well I hate the stuff but Red Bull is what I have right before I play to pick me up.
Do you do the whole groupie love thing?
Once upon a time....
Which other celebrity would you like to be trapped in a lift with and why?
Ant or Dec to ask them why they won't just fuck off!
