Cambridge has a new drum and bass duo, in the form of Commix. The pair, made up of George Levings and Guy Brewer are influenced by the likes of Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Plastikman. Their new L.P is out end this month.

How did you get started?

George: We'd sat around a lot playing computer games and listening to drum and bass, techno and hiphop during the mid nineties. We had other friends in town who were making music and around 2000 we decided to pull together and get some kit. From there it took a long time to come up with a sound that actually felt like us.

How would you describe your music?

Dunno, as different and experimental as we can possibly make it. We love all sorts of music so there’s a lot of different influences in there.

Best ever gig you have played to date?

There have been loads of wicked ones but the 06S night at Womb in Tokyo stands out for us. The sound system was superb, the crowd was raving and they have the best visuals setup in the world! Which made for a proper good night. On top of that Tokyo is just crazy.

What was your best gig or band that you have seen as a gig-goer?

Recently we went to see Cobblestone Jazz thing. That was a real eye opener. A proper example of how to perform techno live. It’s really jazz infused and experimental which is right down our street and we love Mathew Jonson's solo stuff, so we knew this had to be worth seeing.

What’s currently your favourite band(s)?

We listen to tons of different music, old soul, funk and jazz stuff and also more experimental guitar based stuff like Floyd or Jefferson Airplane. As far as the new stuff goes were big Radiohead fans and we've been getting quite into the Killers lately.

What was your first job?

Haha we both worked in kitchens. Washing up. After that we worked on the punts in Cambridge which was a lot more fun.

When was the last time you threw-up? And why?

George: I think it was in the comfort of our local club in Cambridge. Went out with logistics and had a stupid impromptu drinking competition. Don't remember much. I know I was hurting the next day though!
Guy: The morning after our night Spoonfed's first birthday party, there was a bottle of vodka behind the decks it disappeared very quickly.

What’s your pre-gig tipple of choice?

George: Beer.
Guy: I'm quite partial to a nice JD & coke.

If you were an animal, what type would you be and why?

George: I think I’d like to be a spider monkey. I like swinging from trees and eating fruit.
Guy: I’ve always admired the lifestyle of a household cat. You get fed and given water everyday and hunting mice looks like fun.
